The first seven days set the tone for how your tattoo heals. Fresh ink is essentially an open wound: the skin is traumatised, plasma and ink can weep through the film, and your body is building a new protective layer.

Treat it gently and consistently, and you give the lines the best chance to stay crisp. At Chill Ink in Galata we walk every client through aftercare before they leave — because good healing starts with clear instructions.

Fine line tattoo session — gentle aftercare protects delicate linework from day one

Why week one matters

What you do in the first seven days affects how ink settles for years. Heavy scabs, friction, and soaking can pull pigment from thin lines or cause uneven healing.

Less is more. Gentle washing, thin moisturiser, and patience beat aggressive care.

Expect some redness, warmth, and a dull ache — that is normal. Light flaking and itching usually start around day three or four. Do not scratch or pick; a gentle slap or cool compress helps.

Day 0–1: first wash and covering

Tattoo station preparation — your artist applies aftercare instructions before you leave

For the first few hours, leave whatever covering your artist applied in place unless they tell you otherwise. When you remove it — usually after a few hours or the next morning — wash your hands, then rinse the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.

  • Wash hands before touching the tattoo
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub
  • Apply a thin layer of recommended aftercare product
  • Less is more — a heavy smear traps moisture and can cause irritation

Unsure about a product or step? Message us on WhatsApp with a photo — we would rather answer a quick question than see a small issue become a bigger one.

Days 2–7: daily routine

Over the next days, wash twice daily and moisturise lightly when the skin feels tight or dry. Wear loose, breathable cotton over the area and avoid tight waistbands or straps that rub.

Days 2–3

Redness and warmth continue. Some plasma or light weeping is normal. Keep washing twice daily.

Days 3–5

Light flaking and itching begin. Do not scratch or pick. Moisturise lightly when skin feels tight.

Days 5–7

Flaking increases. The top layer is still forming — continue gentle care and avoid soaking.

Travel tattoo prep — keep aftercare simple and consistent throughout the first week

If you work in a dusty environment, keep the tattoo covered with clean clothing. For travel timing, see getting a tattoo in Istanbul.

What to avoid in the first week

Skip gym sessions that soak the tattoo in sweat, saunas, baths, and direct sun for the first week. Avoid swimming pools, sea dips, and hammam until the top layer has fully closed.

  • No soaking — quick showers only
  • No sun exposure on the fresh tattoo
  • No tight or synthetic clothing over the area
  • No picking scabs or scratching flakes
  • No gym friction or heavy sweating on the tattoo
  • No alcohol-based products or harsh soaps

When to worry

Signs that need attention include spreading redness, yellow or green discharge, fever, or pain that worsens instead of easing — contact your artist or a doctor if those appear.

When unsure about a patch of dryness or how your tattoo is progressing, message us on WhatsApp with a photo. Contact the studio if you need in-person assessment.

Local Guide

Amazing location, great people, and extremely talented artists! I got a tattoo under my knee — a very sensitive area — but I felt comfortable throughout. These ladies are clean, professional, and gentle. The location next to Galata Tower is absolutely unreal! Genuinely considering flying back to Istanbul for my next tattoo.
